Calligraphy

« With calligraphy, it’s the style before anything else. Knowing the signification of writing is not the only purpose. The aim in particular is the movement, the energy, the precision that is needed and the pictorial aspect.
I’ve started calligraphy in 2002 and I received my master title in 2011. It’s an honour for me !

I like this ceremony : when we are about to write, the straight position, the ink preparation with the stick (the Sumi) that we soak in some water drops and that we rub on the little stone container (the Suzuri). I feel transported by the noise of rubbing and the smell of earth when the ink is melting. I like the ink tone and the variations of colours. I also like the fluiditu of movement, the paintbrush that skims the surface of the paper without interruption until the ink runs out, without breaking the movement. As we write, the paintbrush is parched ; the outline is first full and then becomes irregular, even hairy… »

Art of mounting

All my paintings and calligraphies are either mounted on screens that I design and make myself following the ancestral rules and techniques taught by Michiko Shimizu in Tokyo’s Masumi studio, where I learnt the traditional art of mounting for 6 years.

Painting

Valérie Laudier creates and executes original, contemporary and refined patterns on paper and material. They are directly inspired from the ornemental and symbolic world of japanese culture, such as the three auspicious vegetal symbols that are bamboo, pine tree and prunus flower, the kimonos stylized medalions, the temple tiles borders, a stone covered with moss or a shadow effect.

Dyeing

The japanese paper (called washi) offers, through thousands of techniques, a range of color and textured effects. Dipped in indigo or black ink, coated with Sakura essence or fermented khaki juice, creased, cracked or covered with a golden or silver leaf, the papers enhance the calligraphic artwork.
